Location / How to Find Us:

    • Situated on the Capricorn Coast between Yeppoon and Emu Park - right opposite the beautiful beach at Kinka Beach.

    • Yeppoon is 12 Km (approx) to the North, and Emu Park is 5 Km (approx) to the South. Rockhampton is 45 Km (approx) to the West.

Above is a map of Australia showing Rockhampton in red. Kinka Beach (and Yeppoon and Emu Park) are about 45 Km East of Rockhampton in Central Queensland, Australia. To the right of this is a map of the Capricorn Coast area of Central Queensland, Australia showing Rockhampton, and (on the coast) Yeppoon, Emu Park, with Kinka Beach in between. Kinka Beach is between Yeppoon and Emu Park : about 12 Km south of Yeppoon and about 5 Km north of Emu Park.

How to find us via each route:

Note: The "Kinka Palms Motel" writing on our roadside sign has bright yellow letters on a dark blue background, and these letters glow brightly when car headlights are anywhere nearby, so even if you are arriving late, you should still see our sign. In our office / reception window, we have bright / flashing "Open" and "Vacancy" signs, and these are highly visible from the road.

There are two main ways to travel to Kinka Palms from Rockhampton - via Yeppoon or via Emu Park - both ways are about the same travel time and distance. Here are the directions for how to find us via each route:

      • From Rockhampton via Yeppoon: On the northern side of Rockhampton on the Bruce Highway, just north of Central Queensland University, turn off the highway following the signs from Rockhampton to Yeppoon.  After a drive of approximately 35 minutes through some beautiful country (you will see Mt Jim Crow, Pine Mountain, and other volcanic "plugs"), you will be close to Yeppoon and you will come to a series of round-a-bouts.  When you come to the last of these - it is the 3rd round-a-bout - you can only veer left into Yeppoon or turn right to head south towards Emu Park (you cannot go straight ahead at this round-a-bout). Take the right turn (heading south towards Emu Park). The road you are now on should be Scenic Hwy - follow this for about 12 Kms.  You will pass by a series of beaches - Tarrangaba, Lammermoore, Rosslyn Bay Harbour, Mullambin, Causeway Lake, etc. After about 12 Km (from Yeppoon) you should then see us on the right hand side of the road - we are a white lowset U shaped group of buildings, with a roadside sign out the front saying "Kinka Palms Motel" right opposite the lovely beach at Kinka Beach.

      • From Rockhampton via Emu Park: In Rockhampton, on the northern side of the "Old Bridge" and turn east down Lakes Creek Rd (a sign on the corner says "Emu Park"). You should now be heading to Emu Park. After a drive of approximately 35 minutes through the countryside, you should arrive at a little town called Emu Park. In the main part of Emu Park, you will come to a cross roads (with little shops / restaurants), and a sign showing Yeppoon to the left. Turn left and head north towards Yeppoon. About 4 Km north of Emu Park, you will come to a right hand turn (the first sign says "Capricorn Beaches" and a second smaller sign says "Kinka Beach". Turn right here (be careful, the turn is tight) and drive for about 1 Km, on the way you will pass Kinka Kippa (our local take away / cafe). After 1 Km, you should see us on the left hand side of the road - we are a white lowset U shaped group of buildings, with a roadside sign out the front saying "Kinka Palms Motel" right opposite the lovely beach at Kinka Beach.

Great Climate, Calm Ocean, and (virtually) No Jellyfish !!:

      • This area of the Australian coast is just inside the tropics - i.e. it is just north of the Tropic of Capricorn. As a result, we have a climate that is perfect for human habitation - we are not too hot and not too cold. We also receive very little rain. e.g. 90+ days out of 100 seem to have cloudless blue skies and gentle sea breezes, and the temperature very rarely goes above 30°C (86°F) or below 10°C (50°F).

      • The ocean in this part of the coast is very gentle - almost all wave activity is blocked by The Great Barrier Reef and the Keppel Islands. As a result, we do not get large / rough seas, big waves, or strong currents. The ocean is very safe for snorkelling and swimming for adults and children. However, if you are not a good swimmer, please swim between the flags on beaches patrolled by Life Savers, such as Emu Park and Yeppoon.

      • Jelly fish, marine stingers, etc also seem to be very rare around here, even in the middle of summer. Further north, Airlie Beach, Cairns, etc you have to be very careful in summer, but we just don't seem to get many nasties around here. I've been living here since 1996, and have only heard of a few local jellyfish sting cases in all that time. (It is always best to play it safe though, especially in Summer).

    Meals, Restaurants, Take-Aways, Supermarkets, etc:

    • We don't have a restaurant on site .... well, not yet anyway !!

    • Kitchen: However, every single one of our apartments is fully self-contained with its own kitchen-ette (sink, microwave, bench top hotplate, toaster, fridge / freezer, cutlery, crockery, and cooking pots and pans and microwave dishes, etc). So, you can prepare your own meals if you like.

    • Supermarkets: Large supermarkets (Coles, Woollies, etc) are located at Rockhampton (45 Km to the West) and Yeppoon (12 Km to the North). Smaller supermarkets can be found at Emu Park (5 KM to the South).

    • Corner stores: where you can buy drinks and some basic food items, like bread, milk, drinks, etc are located nearby. The nearest is located 3 doors from our motel.

    • Restaurants: Numerous restaurants (such as Thai, Chinese, Italian, sea food, steak, etc), as well as up-market resorts and the Keppel Bay Sailing Club , are all within a 12 Km radius. The nearest restaurant is 0.5 Km from our motel.

    • Take Aways: Numerous take aways (such as Thai, Chinese, Italian, fish and chips, hamburgers, etc) are all within a 12 Km radius. The nearest take-away is 0.5 Km from our motel, and sells fish and chips, hamburgers, etc.

    Facilities :

    • Located right opposite the beautiful beach at Kinka Beach, on the Capricorn Coast.

    • Most rooms feature spectacular views of the Keppel Bay islands and ocean.

    • We have both Double and Two Room Family apartments available.

    • All rooms are fully self-contained with their own kitchen-ette (sink, microwave, bench top hotplate, toaster, fridge / freezer, cutlery, crockery, and cooking pots and pans and microwave dishes, etc).

This same Route 20 Bus also runs to Emu Park, Zilzie, Roslyn Bay Harbour / Marina, and other sea-side locations between Emu Park and Yeppoon, and it also stops at several large shopping centres in Rockhampton and Yeppoon.

Cancellation Policy: (Last Updated: 20-Feb-2011)

  • Please understand that the last thing we want to do is upset anyone or discourage guests from returning to the motel because we have kept their deposit or charged a cancellation fee following a cancellation, however, we must protect ourselves from the financial loss and extra work caused by cancellations.

  • Our experience has been that for peak times, people typically sort out their accommodation many months in advance, and few, if any, are looking for accommodation in the few weeks prior to the time or during the time. For accommodation providers, there is nothing worse than being booked out for many months prior to a peak period and then receiving a last minute cancellation and being stuck with empty rooms right through the busy period and having to wait behind the reception desk all Christmas, New Year, etc, hoping someone will come along to rent the cancelled rooms.

  • The Cancellation Policy that applies to your booking depends on when the booking is for. There are 4 options:

Our Cancellation Policy for each of these periods is discussed below.

** Cancellation Policy for Off-Peak Periods:

Bookings at Off-Peak times are subject to the following cancellation policy:

    • If you cancel prior to the day of arrival, you will receive a full refund. No cancellation fees.
    • If you cancel at anytime on the day of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 1 night of accommodation (for each apartment booked).

Example: If you are due to arrive on Friday, then you will need to cancel before midnight on Thursday to avoid cancellation fees.

Changes made to a booking on the day of arrival or after arrival, such as shortened bookings and changed nights, will be treated as cancellations and will be subject to the above cancellation fees.

** Cancellation Policy for Mid-Season periods (school holidays, long weekends, public holidays):

Bookings at Mid-Season times are subject to the following cancellation policy:

    • If you cancel 8 or more days prior to arrival, you will receive a full refund. No cancellation fees will apply.
    • If you cancel within 7 days of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 1 night of accommodation (for each apartment booked).

Example: If you are due to arrive on Friday, then you will need to on or before Thursday (of the prior week) to avoid cancellation fees. If you book in for 3 nights for a long weekend, but after arrival you change your plans and decide to only stay 2 nights, then you will not receive any refund for the 1 cancelled night.

Changes made to a booking within 7 days of arrival or after arrival, such as shortened bookings and changed nights, will be treated as cancellations and will be subject to the above cancellation fees.

** Cancellation Policy for Short Peak Periods (Easter, Surf Carnivals, Bulk-Apartment bookings, and special events):

Bookings at Short-Peak times are subject to the following cancellation policy:

    • If you cancel 15 or more days prior to arrival, you will receive a full refund. No cancellation fees will apply.
    • If you cancel within 8-14 days of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 1 night of accommodation (for each apartment booked).
    • If you cancel within 7 days of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 2 nights of accommodation (for each apartment booked). (If booking length is less than 2 nights, there will be no refund).
    • No refund for early departure.
    • No refund / discount for turning up with less people.

Example: If you are due to arrive on Friday, then you will need to cancel on or before Thursday (of 2 weeks prior) to avoid cancellation fees. If you book in for 3 nights of Easter, but after arrival you change your plans and decide to only stay 2 nights, then you will not receive any refund for the 1 cancelled night.

Changes made to a booking within 14 days of arrival or after arrival, such as shortened bookings and changed nights, will be treated as cancellations and will be subject to the above cancellation fees.

** Cancellation Policy for Peak Periods (December 20 to January 15, including Chrismtas and New Year):

As peak periods draw closer, it becomes increasingly difficult to fill vacancies left by cancellations, because most people have already sorted out their travel and accommodation arrangements by then. Cancellations in the weeks leading up to a peak period are often very difficult to fill. Cancellations in the days leading up to peak periods are virtually impossible to fill, and require us to spend extra hours / days in the office, ruining our Chrismtas plans. Our cancellation policy for peak times reflects the increasing difficulty of re-booking nights cancelled as the period draws closer. The following cancellation policy applies to Peak bookings:

    • * If you cancel 45 or more days prior to arrival, you will receive a full refund. No cancellation fees apply.
    • If you cancel within 36-44 days of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 1 night of accommodation (for each apartment booked).
    • If you cancel within 29-35 days of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 2 nights of accommodation (for each apartment booked). (If booking length is less than 2 nights, there will be no refund).
    • If you cancel within 22-28 days of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 3 nights of accommodation (for each apartment booked). (If booking length is less than 3 nights, there will be no refund).
    • If you cancel within 15-21 days of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 4 nights of accommodation (for each apartment booked). (If booking length is less than 4 nights, there will be no refund).
    • If you cancel within 8-14 days of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 5 nights of accommodation (for each apartment booked). (If booking length is less than 5 nights, there will be no refund).
    • If you cancel within 7 days of arrival: cancellation fee = cost of 7 nights of accommodation (for each apartment booked). (If booking length is less than 7 nights, there will be no refund).
    • No refund for early departure.
    • No refund / discount for turning up with less people.

Changes made to a booking within 45 days of arrival or after arrival, such as shortened bookings and changed nights, will be treated as cancellations and will be subject to the above cancellation fees.

Examples: If you are due to arrive on 24-Dec, then you will need to cancel on or before 09-Nov to avoid cancellation fees. If you cancel on 12-Dec (12 days prior to arrival), then the cancelation fee will be "5 nights of accommodation (for each apartment booked). (If booking length is less than 5 nights, there will be no refund)". If you book in for 10 days at Christmas, but after arrival you change your plans and decide to only stay 5 nights, then you will not receive any refund for the cancelled 5 nights.

If there is any chance that you may need to cancel or change your booking because of accident, illness, injury, family emergency, fire, bad weather, flood, travel delays, changes of plan, employment issues, car breakdowns, or any other reason(s), then we highly recommend that you take out suitable Travel Insurance. A good place to start is an internet search (e.g. search on: "cancellation insurance" +Australia). This search will list numerous insurance companies that may be able to help. You need to do your own research and verifications before taking out any insurance, to make sure the insurance covers exactly what you need it to cover.

We highly recommend travel and cancellation insurance and urge everyone to take out suitable travel and cancellation insurance when travelling at any time, and especially when this travel is at peak times. Such insurance is usually available at very reasonable prices. For example, it costs approximately the same as 1 night's accommodation for 2 weeks of Travel and Cancellation Insurance at peak times.

  43. Had a lovely time staying in Kinka. A great place for people with dogs. The owners were very welcoming and made our stay comfortable. The beach across the road was beautiful and the dogs enjoyed a swim every second day. The location was good with shops and restaurants close by. A great place to recharge your batteries. 4/5.

  44. Just wanted to say a HUGE thanks for having us at Unit 6 on Saturday night (14/2). We had the absolute best time & Lonhro really enjoyed his first ever holiday!! :) You guys are so wonderful to open up a room as “Pet Friendly” - having said that, the room is so immaculate that you would have no idea that it was the designated Pet Friendly quarters!! It is a very unique service you offer & we have told all of our pet-loving friends about it. We will be back – with the fur child & new baby soon!! Take Care,
Chris, Jane & Lonhro, Rockhampton, Qld, February 2009.

  45. Best break away, Thankyou.
Jo & Kirsty Neylan xxx, Home Hill, Qld, February 2009.

  46. Very enjoyable 9 night stay with wonderfully humble place with a terrific pool and warm beds. Was such a relief to find a clean and quiet place to share with our pets. Murray is one of the champions who cleans the units and maintains the yards. We found him lovely, approachable and very effecient in his job, who just loves animals. Thankyou all for a truely lovely stay...i recommend this place as a list topliner when looking for a place to stay in and around Yeppoon. 5/5.
    Wayne Parry, QLD, January 2009.

  47. Murray and Mike: Thanks so much for looking after us ! The ice creams [in the freezer] are on us ! Thanks again :)
Meredith and Dave, Longreach Qld, January 2009.

UPDATE: Dave wrote a nice article about their stay: Holidays with Dogs (April 6th, 2009). Thank you for the lovely feedback, please come back and see us again soon !! :)

      Here's a short quote from Dave's Article:

      • So, how did it go? The short answer is that it was great! Mike, the owner, and Murray, his off-sider, couldn’t have been more helpful. Both were very easy going and really made the holiday the relaxing time that it was. The rooms are not super-modern but very comfortable and have all the mod-cons you really need out of a relaxing holiday destination. The location was superb with a short walk over the road and through the dunes to the beach.

  48. Wonderful ! I feel that I've had a true break. Mike and Murray are the most gracious hosts. Will recommend to all :)
    W. Parry, Deagon Qld, January 2009.

  49. The accommodation was very clean and tidy with extremely friendly staff. The site is pet friendly and this is a huge bonus, as there are limited places that allow dogs. The apartments are across the road from the beach, so they are in a wonderful location. 4/5.
    Graham, QLD, December 2008.

  50. Great stay. Perfect stopover when driving to Brisbane from FNQ to break the trip up. Terrific fot its dog friendly facilities which not many places offer these days. 5/5.
    Sneza, QUEENSLAND, September 2008.
